The provision of genetic diagnostics is a highly specialised service, which can be successfully positioned in the market only with international positioning, highly automated processes, and continuous expansion of the data and analysis spectrum. The client had limited integration of its IT landscape, each with uses focused on specific applications, resulting in comparatively high manual efforts in ordering a gene analysis, laboratory activities, and delivering the medical report to customers.
The main objective of the project was the realisation of a platform for digitising all customer interactions and increasing the degree of automation of the processes within the scope of genetic diagnostics. The platform should provide all services from order allocation and tracking to downloading reports. After the initial set-up of the platform, it was to be expanded for the distribution of further digital knowledge management products extending beyond pure diagnostics.
After analysis of the solutions in the market, the decision for the implementation was made in the form of a strategic individual solution. Together with experts the business analysis, including process optimisation, could be advanced to such an extent that a relevant implementation partner was chosen. This was then used to develop the platform in an agile process by direct control of the project. Additionally, the integration concept for the automation of the cross-application processes was developed and the interface imagined. In the final phase of Release 1.0, the focus was on testing and go live.
After the successful launch of a base product, the planned functional expansion of the platform took place in regular releases, resulting in a single-access solution that integrates all processes from the order, via the laboratory, to reporting.
Development of an IT strategy to enable international growth

The growing and largely self-driven IT landscape with a low degree of integration of the applications and associated data was identified as an obstacle to growth. Genetic analysis and related services are very much dependent on professional IT use. As technology progressed, there was a risk of being overtaken by competitors due to insufficient growth targets that could not being achieved because of inadequate IT skills.
An innovative and adaptive IT architecture was required for the targeted business growth for genetic diagnostic services with an international focus, which encompasses a high level of automation of both digital processes and the analysis and management of data based on the latest 'Big Data' technologies. The aim of the project was to develop an IT strategy and architecture that would enable the company to achieve its ambitious goals.
Based on a focused analysis of the requirements of the business strategy and the existing IT strategy, a vision / mission and comprehensive guidelines for the realignment of IT were developed. Along with elements of a tried and tested IT strategy framework, the project team has carried out in-depth workshops on the actual situation and goal, and developed proposals for the future scope of services, IT processes, IT organisation / governance, applications, data management, and infrastructure. Finally, a road map and investment plan for the implementation of the IT strategy emerged.
After conception and confirmation by the management and supervisory boards, IT management was fully aligned with the new IT strategy developed. The implementation of the highly prioritised measures had, in the meantime, already been completed.
